Plans for a new £250,000 public information centre at the site of a toilet block in Shrewsbury town centre have been dramatically scaled down.
Shrewsbury Town Council want to carry out the revamp to replace public toilets in Butcher Row which were closed in 2010 due to problems with anti-social behaviour.
Initial plans included a new public information centre and retractable roof covering part of the development but these have now been dropped in a fresh application to Shropshire Council. It has been replaced by an information wall giving guidance to town visitors, and which could be interactive.
The unitary authority asked the town council to look again at the initial proposals last month due to objections about the canopy roof over the outdoor exhibition and entertainment space. But the latest plans also omit the information centre.
David Owen, project architect for Base Architecture, said today: “There was going to be a retractable canopy roof over the outdoor exhibition and entertainment space.”
