Comment as made to Civic Society:
The existing toilet block is a fine little piece of post-war architecture, reserved in its impact on the street but enlivened by its curved form, floating roof on open steelwork trusses and decorative brickwork, with signage in a font of its time. Its current aspect is marred by inappropriate ‘heritage’ litter bins, flower tubs and benches. By comparison the proposal above has an attention-seeking but clumsy abutment of wall and glazing materials and handrailing clutter. I would have thought if there are problems with maintenance, supervision etc, these ought to be solvable without loss of original design quality.
On a recent visit to Shrewsbury amongst the medieval and georgian city I was also impressed by the 1970′s Shire Hall on The Square, Lloyds Bank on Pride Hill, Castle Bridge of 1950 and the Market Buildings on Shoplatch, are these also under threat?
Oh, what an unfortunate thing the twentieth century was….
